Pirita Virtanen was selected as the first foreign member of the Swiss Arbitration Centre's (former SCAI's) Advisory Council for Mediation.
This is excellent news, as Switzerland is one of the main hubs for international disputes and the Swiss Arbitration Centre is one of leading arbitration and mediation institutions.
The tasks of the Advisory Council for Mediation include
rendering recommendations within its competence under the Swiss Rules of Mediation ("the Swiss Rules"). This primarily means preparing a list of mediators to the parties to choose from and appointing mediators to cases if parties fail to provide their order of preference on the list provided to them;
discussing application and interpretation of the Swiss Rules; and
promoting and supporting the practice of mediation under the Swiss Rules.
Mediation Advisory Council members may also mediate under the Swiss Rules, but this is the case only, if both parties nominate an Advisory Council Member to serve as a mediator in their case.
Pirita comments: "This is a great opportunity to promote mediation under one of the premier providers of international dispute resolution services in Europe. I am very greateful and excited to serve as the first foreign member of the Swiss Arbitration Centre's Mediation Advisory Council."
